If you want to apply for a license in another state, many states allow you to streamline the process, often called licensure by endorsement. Rather than reapplying from scratch, you only need to demonstrate that your existing credentials meet the new state’s requirements. This immersive approach exposes students to real-world practice, buttressed by experiential coursework and reflective supervision. At each stage in their development as professional counselors, students are equipped with the necessary clinical skills and knowledge to quickly learn. Our program caters to students entering the counseling field with academic and experiential backgrounds in psychology or human services and paraprofessional experiences. Students pursuing our part-time degree paths complete a variety of academic courses before entering the immersive clinical training phase described above. Students who complete our School Counseling program, a 60 credit-hour CACREP accredited program, are eligible to be licensed to practice as school counselors in the State of Vermont. Students may opt to enroll in the Dual Option (76 credit hours), completing educational requirements in the state of Vermont to be eligible for licensure in both school counseling and clinical mental health counseling. The School Counseling concentration provides students with the highly specialized knowledge and skills required for placements as school counselors in public or private elementary, middle, or high school settings.
Program Objectives
Without a license or certificate, most states will not allow you to practice or accept health insurance from clients. To meet state requirements for practice, counseling licensure/certification is necessary. A valid state counseling license/certification serves as proof that a counseling professional has met state-determined qualification standards, including a minimum level of education and requisite hours of supervised clinical experience. The Ohio State University Counselor Education program deeply appreciates the willingness of practicing professional counselors to provide supervision and assistance in the training of our students. The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program also prepares students to seek licensure as a Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in Nevada.
An integral part of the learning experience is the completion of an internship in a counseling setting. The purpose of the internship is to provide the student with practical clinical experience on an ongoing basis during the course of their M.Phil.Ed.
